Playing the Violin is great!
Hi! I’m Myrthe, a violinist and violin teacher in Utrecht. I teach violin to beginners and advanced students with enthusiasm. Kids, teenagers and adults: everybody is welcome for a trial lesson.
Have you played violin in the past and are you planning to pick it up again? Will this be your first violin lesson ever or are you an experienced violinist? In my lessons, having fun is rule number one. Together we’ll talk about your wishes and we’ll make a plan accordingly.
I love it if students bring their own songs or ideas! That intrinsic motivation is the ideal fuel to boost your violin playing. In principle, all ideas are welcome - but we will take it very seriously!
Violin Lessons for Beginners
From the first lesson we’ll start making music. We’ll begin by learning to repeat melodies, playing them by ear and by copying rhythmic patterns to develop a sense of rhythm and musicality. Along the way we’ll learn to read notes purely because it will come in very handy!
During the lessons we will play together - we’ll play violin duets or I’ll accompany you on piano, guitar or double bass. This is always a lot of fun, and this way we’ll prepare you for playing together with other instrumentalists. Playing together is the coolest thing in the world! Curious? Sign up for a trial lesson!
We can also improvise as well if you want - everybody can learn how to do this!
Classical Music to Pop
As a violinist you can play a role in any kind of musical style: pop, klezmer, bluegrass, classical music and everything in between. Together we’ll discover lots of different musical styles to dig deeper into.
Your own Songs?
You can also learn to write your own songs. Of course we’ll start together, completely from the beginning - you don’t need any prior experience. I have the means to record your song when it’s finished. This way you’ll also have your first studio experience!
We dive into the beautiful violin repertoire or explore various other interesting music styles you fancy. Lessons may cover more advanced techniques, tone quality, expression and interpretation of the etudes, concertos and solo pieces you'll be playing. Need help with improvisation, orchestra, ensemble or chambermusic parts? Yes, we will!
What can you expect?
Focus on a relaxed posture and a flexible left hand technique. Exercises for bowing, articulation, playing in tune, slurring, vibrato (a set of skills to make you able to express yourself musically). And a lot of fun and diverse repertoire of course! Sign up for a trial lesson!
You’ve Got Rhythm
I also give a lot of attention to your right hand to develop a sense of rhythm. My goal is to let your hands work together in an optimal, balanced way. You’re playing and sound will progress immensely and you’ll be able to express yourself more freely in music.
My cosy and beautiful practice room is in Utrecht, right behind the Uithof at bus stop Wilhelmina Kinderziekenhuis. A bus stops there every 5 minutes and you can park in front of my house for free!
Lessons at Home?
After consultation, and depending on the distance and the feasibility, it is possible to teach at your home.

Theory & Practice
From the beginning, we’ll put into practice all the music theory you learn. In this way, theory and practice won’t become two separate things.
I started playing the violin when I was five years old. That was also the year I gave my first TV performance, together with Jaap van Zweden! For the first ten years I studied classical music. Then I saw a gypsy band play, and discovered that you can actually play different styles of music on violin. Following that I went to the conservatory to study jazz and pop, and started touring across the world with different ensembles.
In addition, I completed a bachelor in music technology and a masters in composition at the Utrecht conservatorium. Right now, I perform a lot of concerts and write string arrangements for bands, movies and commercials. For instance this year I performed with Duncan Laurence for the Eurovision Song Festival and will play on the North Sea Jazz Festival with my own band. I like to teach, and to teach the love for music.
