I teach the lessons from my home studio close to the Central Station Utrecht, where besides the piano there is also electronic music gear. Lessons at your home are possible.
With the flexibility of the 10 lessons card you'll never miss a lesson.
The best way to learn an instrument is to play the music that moves you. I teach a wide variety of musical styles focusing on classical, neoclassical, minimalism, rock, film music and experimental.
Electronic Music and Piano
I also love creating electronic music to play with the piano, and this we can do together as well! You would learn music production techniques, how to prepare a set for live performance and how to naturally integrate the piano in it. Thus, learning more about Ableton Live, effects, controllers, keyboards, synthesizers, audio interfaces, mixers and other electronic gear.
Experimenting and composing are amongst my favourite activities! I've bowed the piano strings with magnetic tape, or scratched them, recorded sounds of real life and manipulated them on the computer, put electronic effects on the piano, made video respond live to my piano playing, used hand gestures in the air to play synthesizers and even embraced more complex Indian rhythms! If you enjoy experimenting or would like to try, I'll welcome your ideas with open arms, and we can even work on customised versions of the pieces you are working on.
My attraction for piano started already when I was very young in my hometown in Portugal. Aged around five, I started having piano lessons, which eventually prepared me to later study in institutions like the Porto Conservatory, Centro Superior Katarina Gurska (Madrid) and School for the Applied Arts of Castelo Branco (Portugal), where I earned my bachelor degree. These years constituted my solid classical training, but as I grew older, I missed something.
I was looking for mute movies to which I could play piano, when one day in a concert I discovered that video could be programmed to react live to what the musician is playing. This had a great influence on me and led me to delve deeper and deeper into the electronic music and audiovisuals world. Today, in my concerts, I use the piano, electronic music and live video together as a whole, having each element reacting to each other in an immersive audiovisual performance.
In 2018 I was awarded a merit scholarship by GDA Foundation to pursue a master degree in Live Electronics in the Conservatory of Amsterdam. I'm also interested in pushing forward the way new technologies can be used for music making, and have been since using the Leap Motion hands sensor to control electronic music with the gestures of my hands in the air.
Artist in Residence
As result of this work, an invitation to be artist in residency in the University of Arts of Amsterdam followed. I performed in numerous locations, pointing up EYE filmmuseum (Amsterdam), MaderiaDig festival, Uitmarkt festival (Orgelpark, Amsterdam) and Hard Club Porto, as well as appeared in media as De Groene Amsterdammer, RTP Madeira, and Cycling74. In 2019 I was awarded the prize "Young Creators" by the Portuguese National Centre of Culture.
