It has been shown that children do better at school if they do or have done music. The earlier children start learning and playing music, the more receptive to a wider range of learning styles they become. They learn to concentrate and develop a more independent and creative way of learning. We offer music appreciation classes to children too young to start singing or who are getting interested in instrumental classes but would like an introduction into music. (4-8 years)
Prior to the evolution of the violoncello as a solo instrument at the end of the 18th century, Italian makers made basso instruments of large dimensions. In scores we see the term violone. Corelli violin sonatas op V (1700 ) are called Sonate per il Violino e Violone o Cembalo. It means that they actually could be played as duo. Like most, if not all, early italian cellos, around 1680, this instrument, the violone, was reduced in its dimensions. The 'modern' cello is more elegant and allows the cellist to play more virtuoso music. Since the body of the modern cello is slimmer, the sound is less dark and clearer.
As the cello is a versatile instrument it can be used in various music styles. Wonderful solo concertos are composed for the cello by Vivaldi, Dvorak, Saint Saëns, Lalo, Shostakovitch, Schumann and many more. It is always present in symphonic and chamber music repertoire, classical, romantic and contemporary classical music, and the magnificant 6 suites by J.S Bach. But also in jazz, pop, background strings and even heavy metal and hard rock plays the cello an important role.
