Welcome! My name is Boris Oostendorp, I'm an experienced bassist ( Jazz and classical music) and motivating bass teacher in Almere. I offer lessons to students of all ages and levels.

Bass Lessons - Beginners to advanced

Taking bass lessons for the first time in your life? Or more familiar with the bass and wish to dive into your favourite music and develop your technical skills and musicality?

What will we work on?

We will work on bowing technique, a solid sound, plucking/ pizzicato, strong and flexible left hand, intonation, reading notes, improvisation skills, music theory, stiming, walking bass lines, scales, Real Book, orchestral parts and music theory..

Inspiration

In my opinion, inspiration is one of the most important ingredients for playing good music. I will gladly introduce you to all kinds of music that you've maybe never heard of before! Of course we watch the role of the bass closely!

Essential Role

The double bass (upright bass) plays an essential role in many styles of music. As a bass player, you’ll have many opportunities to play together with other musicians. I always encourage that and prepare you for it as much as possible!

Bass Lessons - Classical Music - Jazz

Do you want to discover new music or broaden your musical horizon? I teach classical music, folk, country and my favourite: jazz. If you are looking for help with orchestral parts, I can give good advice and offer solutions to any problem. If you are interested in learning how to play jazz music, we will focus on the three things that are the fundamental to a jazz bassist: timing, sound and choice of notes.

Listening and Learning

It is very helpful and a lot of fun to listen to, and try to copy, the great jazz bassists like Ray Brown, Paul Chambers or the bassists of the Duke Ellington and Count Basie orchestras. You’ll learn a lot about timing, groove, musical choices, taste, and much more.

Practise effectively

When you are busy and don’t have much time to practise, it’s best to know how to practise efficiently. I will observe how you respond to the information that I’m giving to you, and we’ll choose the best approach based upon that.

Size matters – The Mini Bass

Because of its size, the double bass is by definition not the most practical instrument. Especially when you begin, it is difficult to choose the right size. I will be happy to help you find a proper (mini) bass and bow, to rent or to buy.

Trial Bass Lesson

When you book a trial lesson and have no instrument yet, I will provide a double bass that you can use in the trial.

Bass Lessons at Your Home

I live in Almere and teach at my home. However, if you happen to live in Flevoland, Weesp, Huizen, Dronten, Amersfoort or Hilversum area, I can also come to you.

I always strive to create a safe environment in which you can be open and honest towards me (and yourself!). So there is no need to hide your weak points; they are very welcome and treated with respect. With this condition set, you'll develop your musical and technical skills in the best possible way.

About Boris

Since 2010 I have been active as a professional double bassist. From 2006 until 2010, I studied at the Conservatories of The Hague and Rotterdam. In addition to my studies I have received valuable lessons from world renowned bassists such as Duncan McTier, Reuben Rogers, and Chuck Israels. My musical activities include playing jazz with top musicians, playing with several classical orchestra’s and performing with smaller ensembles.
