I have experience in teaching a variety of styles to different abilities and age groups.

Improvisation

Whether you're into jazz, pop or rock, I will give you the tools to be able to improvise. You will learn how to choose the 'right' notes, how to tell a story through your improvisation, and how to use harmonic tricks like pentatonic scales and the blues scale.

Music Theory

I can help you explore the fascinating world of music theory. Using my thorough knowledge of harmony, melody, form and rhythm, I will give you skills to analyse your favourite songs, as well as the tools to compose yourself.

Lesson Location

My studio is located in Amsterdam Oost, Wibautstraat. Private lessons at your house in Amsterdam, Weesp or Diemen are possible.

Online Lessons

I also offer fun, interactive and challenging online lessons for beginners and advanced students. Live feedback, comprehensive exercises and instructions. Book a trial lesson.

What to expect

Common topics include breathing, sound production, technique, improvisation, playing by ear, rhythm, and music theory. Whatever your needs, I tailor my teaching methods depending on your goals.

Typical Lesson Plan

- Warm-up (long tones, breathing exercises, sound and projection)
- scales and technical exercises (reading music, ear training, clapping)
- learning a song (mostly by ear, playing along with recordings)
- developing improvisation skills (building confidence, using improvising tools)
- discussion, questions and deciding homework.

Clarinet - Flute Lessons

About Me

I began playing the saxophone at the age of 8 years old. Within a year I joined my local jazz band and began playing my first professional engagements. Family and friends quickly saw my passion for playing and my dedication to practicing. With the encouragement of my teachers, I won a scholarship to study jazz performance and composition at the Jazz Institute Berlin. Here I began my career as a teacher, travelling between schools encouraging students to discover the joys of making music together. Following a move to Amsterdam in 2016, I widened my teaching to include private students of different abilities, ages and styles. I realised that teaching is as much about unlocking the potential for each student to have fun in making music as it is about imparting knowledge. Lessons should be structured and challenging, but, most importantly, they should bring joy! Currently, I maintain a busy schedule leading the Sam Newbould Quintet. We just released our second album and we play regularly around the Netherlands and Europe. Recent concerts include major festivals like JazzFest Amsterdam and Amersfoort jazz festival. I have also played Holland’s most prestigious venues including BIMHUIS, TivoliVredenburg and LantarenVenster.
