Enjoy playing the Flute!
My name is Inez Popko and I am a Polish professional concert flutist with over 12 years of teaching experience in an international environment. Music plays an important role in my life since I was a child, and it still does! Are you picking up the flute after a break, absolute beginner or more advanced flutist and seeking ways to take your playing to the next level?
Classical and World Music
Are you interested in playing classical music, world music or traditional Chinese music? The modern flute is a versatile instrument and fits in many music styles! Let's explore !
You will learn how to breathe and blow into the flute to achieve as beautiful tone as possible. Flute players use abdominal breathing just like yogis - this breathing technique is beneficial to your well-being and with regular practice you will be able to switch to it automatically. We will play tone exercises aiming at extending your scale, strengthen the lips and play in tune. After some confidence has been gained, you will play short but enjoyable pieces. We will also pay attention to the proper healthy posture. You will be learning some music theory along the way.
Intermediate - Advanced
We will play technique exercises aiming at good finger coordination and velocity, gradually building confidence throughout different keys. We will pay attention to refining your interpretation of a given piece or orchestral part and focus on artistic qualities of your playing: expression, emotion, engaging the listeners. We will be attentive to the tone quality and phrasing. You will also learn some valuable tricks that make flutist's life easier: alternative fingerings, trill fingerings, extended techniques and so on.
Who can benefit?
I offer lessons to teenagers and adults, especially those who already have had some experience and wish to develop further, whether accomplished beginner, intermediate or advanced.
I encourage my students to participate in local ABRSM or Trinity music exams to mark their progress and keep up the motivation to improve their playing. I also accompany my students at the piano which always adds to the enjoyment of music making.
Passionate about Music!
I am very involved during my lessons, ready to demonstrate, play along or improvise a flute accompaniment. The lesson typically starts with some warmup exercises suited to your needs and level, and the core of the lesson is dedicated to music making and repertoire!
Lesson at Your Home
The lessons can be arranged at your place in Voorschoten, Leidschendam, Wassenaar or at my place Rijswijk/The Hague.
Online Flute Lessons
Online lessons are available as well.
I am also happy to coach an ensemble, whether a duo or a bigger setting. Just like in a conversation, the ability to listen to the others while being involved in a discussion is essential. Ensemble playing is a wonderful opportunity to train this ability and more.
I have performed as a concert flutist in Europe, USA and China in halls such as Muziekgebouw and Paradiso in Amsterdam, Hangzhou Theatre, Jiaxing Grand Theatre and others. I play classical music and I also explore traditional Chinese repertoire for my concert tours in China. I have released a CD 'Music for Flute and Piano', but my recordings are also to be found on my YouTube channel.
I began learning violin at the age of seven, flute at ten and piano at twelve. At the age of sixteen I made my solo debut with Koszalin Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Flute Concerto in G Major by J. J. Quantz. A year later I orchestrated Fantasy by Georges Hue and performed it with KPO. I am a winner of many competitions such as 9. National Competition for Young Instrumentalists and 'Etiuda' Competition in Poland. Recently I became a finalist of Boulder International Chamber Music Competition 'Art of Duo' performing in a duo with pianist Nadejda Tzanova in USA. I graduated from the Royal Conservatories in The Hague and Brussels and I hold Masters of Music diplomas in flute and chamber music. I have been teaching flute at Virtuosi School of Music in The Hague, European School in Brussels and currently The British School in The Netherlands. I have also given a flute masterclass in Poland.
