Welcome to my page! My name is Sükrü Kirtis. I am a professional ney player, and alongside many performances on international stages, I thoroughly enjoy giving flute lessons on this enchanting instrument.

Is Playing the Ney Difficult?

The ney is one of the oldest instruments and is, in fact, a simple and primitive instrument. However, to fully convey the maximum possible expression, atmosphere, and originality, the instrument demands a great deal from the player!

Makam and Improvisation

Improvisation is an indispensable aspect of Turkish classical music. Get acquainted with Makam, or deepen your understanding of its background and applications if you're already familiar with it. The Makam system may seem complex at first, but once you grasp it, it becomes clear and gives your improvisations a practical and rich framework. We will go into this in detail, and I will explain everything about what Makam entails, its cultural and historical context, and how you can apply its scales and intonation in your improvisations.

About Sükrü

Born in Amsterdam, Sükrü Kirtis was introduced to the ney, an ancestor of the modern flute, at a young age. With the support of various teachers and ney players, he developed into a virtuoso performer, giving concerts in venues such as the Royal Concertgebouw, Meervaart, and Theater Zuidplein. In addition to performing with the NBE (Netherlands Wind Ensemble), one of the leading orchestras in the Netherlands, he has participated in programs in several countries including France, Belgium, and Germany. Sükrü is active in solo, chamber music, and choir ensembles.
