Hi I am Johannes Fend, all-round bassist and bass teacher in Schiedam. I give double bass lessons to young people and adults in Rotterdam and Schiedam.

Beginner to advanced

Are you a beginner on the double bass and looking for motivating and fun bass lessons? Have you been playing for a while and want to discover how you can play more accurately and take your bowing technique to a higher level?

What can you expect?

A selection from best bass tuition methods (a.o. Simandl Method, Rabbath Method, and Real Book) offers you bowing and  pizzicato technique, reading music, basic music theory, scales and fun duo's to play!

Improvisation and more!

Learn to improvise, play jazz solo's, etudes, classical solo pieces and orchestral parts. Improve your understanding of harmony to get ready to improvise in any situation.

Trial lesson

I have a bass ready for you during the trial lesson, but of course i'm looking forward to hearing you play your own. I'm curious what your favourite type of music is and what your goals are. We discuss lesson times and location and you get an impression of my way of teaching.

Versatile Instrument

The double bass can fit into almost any genre and has an astonishing pallet of possibilities! Enjoy the fun of being in charge for rhythm, harmony, structure, time keeping and groove, whether you play in a symphony orchestra or a band.

Classical, Folk, Klezmer or Jazz

If you wish to be able to play jazz or classical music on a higher level and want to improve your intonation, vibrato, sound quality , plucking and bowing technique, I'm te expert to guide you. I'll give you many tips, specific exercises and professional advice on posture and playing in positions (also thumb position) to gain a solid technique, good sound and timing.

Bass guitar,  a perfect addition!

Many bass players look for opportunities to add other music to their repertoire and then discover the benefits of the bass guitar. You can also contact me for bass guitar lessons in Schiedam and Rotterdam!

I’m teaching in my home studio and have an instrument available for the lessons. Lessons at your place may occasionally be arranged.

Are you about to enter a band but aren’t yet comfortable playing with people? Or playing together with others and sometimes don’t know what to do? Under pressure it's hard to  figure it out on your own? There’s good news, I will be offering professional mentoring in a relaxed setting.

Basic Course Band Playing

The basic course takes 5 lessons and covers the basic skills and most important things you want to know.

Audio Editing

Making your own recording and using audio editing software. If you want I’ll teach you how you can make your own recordings and will advise for finding affordable microphones.
You can learn the basics of working with audio editing software on PC & Mac as well.

About Johannes

Johannes moved to the Netherlands from Austria to study Jazz and classical Music at the Prins Claus conservatory and later do his masters degree in Rotterdam. During his studies he was fortunate to get to study and play with musicians out of the New York Jazz scene such as David Berkman, Paul Berner, Matt Wilson, Todd Coolman, Alex Sipiagin and many more.
He took classical Bass lessons and participated in master classes with Sorin Orcinschi, Francisco Obieta, Catalin Rotaru, Dorin Marc, Matthew Midgley and Wolfgang Güttler.
Johannes is a very active musician and part of various bands. For his solo Project, he won the 2nd Price at the “Il Sole In Cantina Award 2016”. Recently he won also 1st price at “Leiden Jazz Award 2017” with “Marco Apicella Trio”, the price for the best solist at “Erasmus Jazz Price 2017” and he was invited to play at the international Choro Festival in New York City.
