Hi! My name is Julien, I am a pianist and piano teacher in The Hague. My piano lessons are for beginners and advanced players alike. I have an eclectic background going from Jazz to rock and classical music. Welcome to explore the piano, keyboard, synthesizer and  music production!

Piano Lessons in French and English

I am passionate about making any kind of music and teaching! Whether you want to play rock music, pop songs, jazz standards or write your own music. Lessons can be held in French and English

Beginners

Many great jazz pianists and rock musicians have learned an excellent classical technique as a basis for their playing. Think of virtuoso pianists like Art Tatum, Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, Herbie Hancock, Brad Mehldau, George Duke, Joe Zawinul, Oscar Peterson or Chick Corea.

Ideal Basis

Perhaps the most important differences between a jazz pianist and a classical pianist are timing and accentuation. With classical piano technique as a starting point, you have an ideal basis for developing your improvisation talent and your skills in terms of timing and playing style.

Piano for Children

With a playful method, classical pieces and folk songs, but also improvisation games and play along to pop songs, your child learns a solid technique. Fun in music comes first!

What can you expect?

My piano lessons offer a solid basis, based upon classical piano technique, focusing on your own goals. This can be any genre you like to develop in. The lessons include basic music theory, jazz harmony, (pentatonic) scales, blues, reading chords and sheet music, developing playing by ear and improvisation.

Improvisation

Improvisation is a big part of my own musical development and I love to introduce it to you. It is a wonderful tool to learn the instrument and most relevant if you want to play Rock, Jazz, Pop, Latin or World Music. It is also a nice way to keep the practice fun, engaging and varied.

Write your own music

Want to compose your own music? Your creativity is inexhaustible and writing music is fun to do! I do it a lot myself and have many tips and tricks!

Synthesizers

I also offer lessons on synthesizers. Immerse yourself in different synthesis techniques and what they are good for. Explore all aspects of sound so you know exactly what to expect by adjusting a specific parameter of your synth. You develop playing techniques specific to synthesizers.

Music with computers

For those who want to record and produce their own music or use computers as part of live performances, I offer lessons in Ableton Live. Topics from the above Synthesizer section will be taught as well as arrangement techniques and basic mixing knowledge so you can get your music out of your head and into a complete and exciting demo or full song!

Ableton next level

For those with some knowledge of Ableton already and that want to go deeper I also teach Max for Live, which is a visual programming language (do not panic, visual means that there is no actual coding involved) that is fully integrated to Ableton Live and that allows anyone to program their own instrument or effect plugins!

New Approach

In this process you will gain a much greater knowledge of what is going on in your computer when you make music. It will open the doors to a vast new world of possibilities in making your music unique and sound like no one else's. A new approach to composition and harmony using computer programming.

Music Theory

Music theory is part of any piano course I teach. The proportion of it in the classes depends on your goals. It can also be taught separately for those who want to get better at composing, arranging or singers and musicians who play a different instrument and want a better understanding of harmony. These lessons, like the others, are tailored to your needs and can be applied to pop, rock, classical or jazz music.

About me

Originally from Switzerland, I started playing the piano at the age of 7. I started with classical music and then went on to study jazz and pop music, where I discovered improvisation, started writing my own music and decided to continue in this path and follow professional studies. I graduated with a bachelor in jazz piano from the Royal Conservatoire of the Hague, followed by a One-Year-Course of electro acoustic music studies at the institute of Sonology, also at the Royal Conservatoire.
I have performed with many jazz, rock and pop bands and continued to play classical music throughout my bachelor. My current band is Etienne Machine, a rock band with which I record and tour. We have released many EPs and albums and played many prestigious venues like the Montreux Jazz Festival.
In addition to playing in various other bands, separate projects and teaching piano, I have developed a passion for computer programming. I use this a lot in my own music and in my audiovisual duo, with which I produce mixes of electronic music and live visuals.

Je m'appelle Julien, je suis né en Suisse et je donne des cours de piano, musique assistée par ordinateur et théorie musicale. Je suis actif dans plusieurs projets et groupes allant du rock au jazz, j'ai étudié le classique, le jazz, la pop et la musique électronique au conservatoire de la Haye oû j'ai obtenu un bachelor de piano jazz et un certificat de musique électronique.

Les cours peuvent contenir de nombreux aspects dépendant de vos envies comme la technique, musicalité, théorie, improvisation, composition, arrangement, enregistrement et mixage basique de musique électronique. Je donne aussi des cours dédiés aux synthétiseurs pour comprendre leur fonctionnement, apprendre les techniques propres à ces instruments et même programmer soi-même ses synthès à l'aide d'Ableton.
