Hi! I’m João Lucas, a professional bassist and music producer based in Voorhout, near Leiden. My bass lessons are designed for intermediate and advanced players who want to explore new genres, refine their technique, and take their musicianship further. If you're also interested in music production and recording, my lessons offer the perfect combination of both worlds.

Do You play in a Band?

Would you like to take your playing to the next level, discover new grooves, improvise with more confidence, deepen your understanding of music theory and harmony, and tighten up your timing? Every lesson is tailored to the music, projects, and goals that matter most to you.

What happens during a Lesson?

You'll work on practical exercises that improve both technique and musicality. Together, we'll analyse the structure, chords, and harmony of the music you're working on, while addressing any technical challenges in your playing. The goal is to help you better understand your instrument and develop your own unique sound and playing style.

Musical Styles

My main focus is on indie rock, shoegaze, alternative rock, funk, free improvisation, and experimental music. Of course, you're always welcome to bring your own musical interests and influences into the lessons.

Personalised Bass Lessons

Every player is different, so we'll find the most comfortable and effective way for you to hold and play the bass. Good hand positioning is essential for a relaxed playing technique. We'll address any tension in your arms or shoulders and work around limitations in flexibility, helping you play comfortably and without strain.

Technique & Coordination

Through targeted exercises, you'll develop coordination and independence between your left and right hands. We'll work on accuracy across the entire fretboard, finger flexibility, and hand control, allowing for smooth, precise movement and greater confidence when playing.

Tone, Slap Bass & Effects

Developing the right sound for your music is just as important as technique. You'll learn a variety of approaches to add colour and character to your playing, including slap bass, muting techniques, hand positioning, and even the distinctive sound and expressive slides of the fretless bass.

Groove

If you play in a band, building a strong sense of groove is essential. We'll focus on rhythm, timing, and locking in with the drums. You'll learn how to make your notes sit perfectly with the kick and snare, and how to control your timing—whether you want to drive the music forward or settle into a deep, laid-back groove.

Improvisation & Sound Textures

For those interested in free improvisation and experimental music, we'll explore unconventional playing approaches and extended techniques. We'll use the bass guitar as a source of sound and texture, creating unique sonic landscapes that can be expanded using pedals, looping, and other creative tools.

Recording & Music Production

If you're interested, lessons can also cover bass recording and production techniques. You'll learn about direct injection (DI), microphone placement, preamps, audio converters, and digital audio workstations (DAWs). For experimental and creative projects, we can also use the DAW as a tool for sound design and sonic exploration.

Where Are the Lessons Held?

Lessons take place in my fully equipped home studio in Voorhout. It's an inspiring environment where you'll not only improve your bass playing but also gain insight into recording and production. The studio is easily accessible for students from Leiden, Wassenaar, Oegstgeest, and the surrounding area.

Trial Lesson

About Me

I'm originally from Portugal and hold both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Double Bass from the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. Alongside my classical training, I specialised in electric bass, and music production.

I'm also a certified recording and mixing engineer, having completed my studies at the Wisseloord Studios Academy. My interest in the music industry extends beyond performance and production, and I also hold a Music Business certification from SAE Amsterdam.
