The Indian bamboo flute is a versatile wind instrument with an enchanting sound, deeply rooted in Indian musical heritage, both in folk and classical music. The bansuri is one of the oldest instruments in the world. We know of its existence because it is mentioned in ancient Vedic scriptures.
What does a bansuri sound like?
The bansuri has a warm, soft, and slightly hued sound. It is the ultimate Hindustani wind instrument for playing the most beautiful ragas and melodies.
How do you choose a bansuri if you don't have one yet?
The bansuri is available in many different sizes, keys, and qualities. It's best to choose an instrument based on the advice of an experienced player or your teacher.
How many finger holes has the bansuri?
The bansuri is played like a transverse flute and has 6 to 7 finger holes. The bansuri has no keys and is made of bamboo.
What does bansuri mean?
You could actually say that any bamboo flute is a bansuri, because the name is composed of Ban (bamboo) and Suri, Shri, which means sound. However, we usually mean the bansuri as we know it today.
Is it difficult to learn to play the bansuri?
One of the most important elements of flute playing is breathing. A relaxed posture and calm focus are essential for learning to play the bansuri. The six finger holes and the blowing method make the bansuri easy to learn in that respect.
Can you play the bansuri if you can blow on a beer bottle?
Well....the blowing method is similar! You've already mastered that!
