About Bass Guitar lessons

Why is bass guitar so popular?

Because whether it is in baroque music, where the bass part of the basso continuo is usually performed on instruments such as cello, violone, double bass, gamba or bassoon, or in pop music, funk, blues, rock, metal, reggae, Latin or jazz;  Melody, improvisation and harmony cannot exist without the structure and driving force of a well-executed bass part!

Is bass guitar difficult to play?

Bass guitar, like other instruments, is quite easy to learn and can be as difficult as you make it. If you know just a few notes and practice regularly, you can quickly join a band!

Can I take lessons as an advanced bassist?

If you want to raise the bar even though you already have a lot of experience, you'll find many teachers on this site who can perfectly help you!

Is bass guitar fun to play?

You're the lead in your band when it comes to groove, whether you play jazz, pop, rock, Latin, or funk... well... together with your drummer, of course! Bass guitar is definitely fun and challenging to play. It's important that you have good technique, are a good listener, and play tightly!

What should you be able to do as a bassist?

Harmony, timing, stability and power are in your hands. In addition to instrumental and musical skills, being a bassist is certainly also a matter of mentality. Hard work, 'service' to the soloist always, reliability and stability are key words for a bassist.

Are there bass guitars that are suitable for children?

Indeed, there are the so-called ‘short scale’ bass guitars. These are bass guitars with a slightly shorter neck and the frets are slightly closer together, so that you can still get a good grip on the string, if you have smaller hands.

Does a bass guitar always have frets?

There are also fretless basses. Here you must determine the intonation yourself and place your fingers in exactly the right place, just like with a cello or double bass.
An example of a fantastic bassist who played fretless bass is Jaco Pastorius.

How is the bass guitar tuned?

Just like the modern double bass, a bass guitar is tuned in fourths. If you have a 4-string bass guitar, it looks like this from the bottom (lowest) string: EADG

Do all bass guitars have 4 strings?

There are also bass guitars with more strings. Some electric basses have a thick and low B string under the E. Super fat and nice sound! But you can also play with a high C, then you still have 5 strings.

Why would you use a bass guitar with 6 strings?

The sound of your bass guitar is different in the highs when you have a 'solo' string. You can then expand your repertoire and play even more types of music. A 6-string bass has a slightly wider neck with a low B and a high C. This way you can play solos and chords and everywhere, without having to change position much.

Which bass guitar for which genre?

Your taste and preference for sound determines which instrument you are going to play. There are basses that are better suited to jazz and others better for pop, rock, metal or funk. The pick-ups and type of strings also determine a lot of your sound and playing style. Your teacher can advise you well in this.
