About Hobo lessons
What is an oboe?
The oboe is a double-reed instrument and belongs to the woodwind family. It's a soprano instrument, an instrument with a high pitch and therefore suitable for carrying the melody, the overtone. The oboe family also includes an alto instrument, an oboe d'amore, and the oboe da caccia. Each has its own unique tonal identity. Beautiful!
Is it difficult to learn the oboe?
Compared to the flute, saxophone, or clarinet, the oboe is much harder to learn. To blow the air through the reed, you need a very strong breath, and the hole you have to blow the air through is very small. That's quite challenging.
Is playing the oboe fun for children?
Although the oboe is a difficult instrument, it's absolutely suitable for children (from about 10 years old) to learn to play. Always request a trial lesson first
Is the oboe also a suitable instrument if you're a bit older?
You can certainly start taking oboe lessons as an adult. With regular practice, you'll eventually develop a beautiful tone.
Can you play many types of music on the oboe?
The oboe is truly a melody instrument, and you can play classical, popular, romantic, and baroque music beautifully. For example, the oboe is frequently featured in beautiful baroque cantatas by Bach and solo concertos and chamber music by Telemann, Marcello, Bach, Boismortier, and many other baroque pieces.
Can you play the oboe in an orchestra?
In classical, romantic, impressionist, and contemporary music, the oboe is indispensable in orchestras, solo ensembles, and chamber music ensembles. Although not a string instrument, the oboe often plays first violin!
