Music Education and Autism
A Simple and Effective Approach for Children with Autism
By Dr. Erman Türkili
Today, the First Steps of a Little Artist method is used in more than 20 countries around the world. It is actively used by educators, parents, and children, including those in special education settings. This growing international community shows Music can be a powerful tool for every child, and for children with autism, it can be even more meaningful. Music helps children express themselves, improve their focus, and feel more connected to the world around them. However, traditional music lessons are not always suitable for every child, especially for very young learners or children with different learning needs.
Every child learns in a unique way. Children with autism often prefer visual learning, need clear and simple instructions, and feel more comfortable with structure and repetition. Traditional music education, which usually begins with complex notes and abstract symbols, can sometimes feel confusing or overwhelming.
For this reason, I developed a different approach called First Steps of a Little Artist. This method introduces music in a simple, visual, and step-by-step way. Instead of starting with traditional notation, children learn through colors, simple symbols, and carefully structured activities. This allows them to understand music more easily, enjoy the learning process, and most importantly, start playing from the very beginning.
This visual and structured system works especially well for children with autism. It supports their natural strengths, reduces confusion, and creates a clear and predictable learning environment. Children can learn at their own pace, repeat activities as needed, and build confidence through small, successful steps. When children feel comfortable and successful, they naturally become more motivated and engaged.
To support learning beyond lessons, the method is also available as a mobile application. The app allows children to practice in a familiar environment, repeat exercises as often as they like, and learn together with their parents. This creates a strong connection between lessons and daily life, which is especially important for children who benefit from consistency and routine. that a simple, clear, and visual approach to music education can work across different cultures and learning environments.
Music does not always require words. For children with autism, music can become a natural way to express emotions, improve concentration, and connect with others. It offers a safe and enjoyable space where children can explore, create, and grow. In this sense, music is not only an artistic activity, but also a bridge to communication and development.
My goal is to continue developing this approach so that more children can experience music in a way that feels natural, accessible, and joyful. Every child deserves the opportunity to connect with music in their own way.
