Saxophone Lessons in Amsterdam — Jazz, Pop, Classical

Hi, I'm Andrius, a professional saxophonist and saxophone teacher based in Amsterdam Noord. I studied jazz saxophone at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and have performed at venues including Bimhuis and North Sea Jazz Festival. I lead the band 12 Tribes of Mars (Dubophonic Records, debut album "Hidden Sun" out now) and play in several other Amsterdam and international projects.

Soprano, alto and tenor saxophone 

I teach soprano, alto and tenor saxophone to students of all ages, from 10 to 80, and all levels, from complete beginners to advanced players. Scheduling is flexible. For younger children, I start them on flute instead, it's a similar instrument, and by the time they switch to saxophone they're already comfortable reading music and handling an instrument, so the transition is smooth.

Your First Lesson

If you're a total beginner, we start simple: putting the instrument together, making your first sounds, and learning a couple of easy songs with me accompanying you on piano. The goal early on is to get a feel for the instrument and enjoy playing, not just drill technique.

Your Playlist Is Where We Start

Lessons are built around your goals and taste, not a fixed method. From the first lesson you're playing real music, not just exercises. We can work on:

• Jazz, pop, funk, soul and classical
• Improvisation and soloing
• Technique, tone and breathing
• Reading and music theory
• Rhythm, timing and articulation

You'll get personalised exercises, play-along tracks, and guidance that matches your level. Advanced students can go further into altissimo, overtones, circular breathing, sound development, and recording and effects.

Exam and Audition Preparation

I also prepare students for the Young Talent program at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, and for entrance exams at conservatories across the Netherlands.

Music Theory and Production

Curious about how tracks are built, EQ, delay, compression? I cover that too. Solid theory also helps you understand how melody and harmony actually interact, which makes improvising easier.

Online Lessons

I also teach online for beginners through advanced players, with live feedback during the lesson.

Location

Lessons take place in my studio near Noorderpark metro station in Amsterdam Noord. Home lessons in Amsterdam are also possible. No waiting list, just book a trial to get started.

About Me

I'm an Amsterdam-based saxophonist and composer working across acoustic playing and live electronics. I grew up in Klaipėda, Lithuania, started out on birbynė (a Lithuanian folk reed instrument), and moved to Amsterdam to study jazz saxophone and later live electronics at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.

Alongside teaching, I lead 12 Tribes of Mars (reggae, ska and dub pushed through free improvisation, debut album "Hidden Sun" out on Dubophonic Records) and the electro-acoustic duo Foon. I've performed at Bimhuis, North Sea Jazz Festival, and festivals across Europe, and collaborated with musicians including Wilbert de Joode and Franky Douglas.
