Enjoying the Violin - Children and adults
Hello! My name is Daniel Lee and I teach violin in Amsterdam. I offer lessons for both children and adults, whether you are a beginner or have been playing for a long time, you are more than welcome to get acquainted and discuss your wishes and goals during a trial lesson.
Children and violin
Most children love music and that is why fun in music is always at the forefront of your child's lessons. I approach violin playing in a playful way and we use fun and modern teaching materials, so that your child is motivated to practise at home, and is enthusiastic to go to the lessons.
Will my child learn to read notes?
Yes, your child will learn to read notes, but we start with holding the bow. We do this with fun games and exercises that train the dexterity of the right hand. We practise bowing in all kinds of rhythms, so that your child gets used to producing sound and holding the instrument. With well-known songs, which we first strum, we learn to place the fingers on the strings and read notes.
Your first violin lessons
Discover the basics with which you can easily play your favourite music later, so that you can express your feelings in music. Having fun during the learning process will help you to learn to read notes, play in tune and get a beautiful sound from your violin. It will stimulate you to develop your passion and love for music.
What do the lessons look like?
I make sure that my approach is always constructive. We use beautiful teaching materials, and we work from a positive attitude, so that you make progress quickly, but always in a relaxed way.
What will you discover?
While playing, you develop the correct posture of the right hand and arm and discover how to conjure up a beautiful sound from your violin!
How?
You start by learning to hold the bow. You do this with fun games and exercises that train the dexterity of your right hand. No stress, we take off with bowing open strings, so that you get used to producing sound and holding the instrument. When you are ready for it, I will introduce a scale and simple melodies to further develop your technique and ear for intonation and musicality.
What can I expect if I already have more experience?
If you are already more advanced, I would like to join in where you left off. Of course, you are welcome with specific questions and we will discuss in detail what you want to develop. In addition to expanding your repertoire, this can also be improving your vibrato, bowing technique, intonation or position play. But also how to develop a critical musical ear, which helps you with phrasing and really telling stories with the music you play.
Explore multiple styles!
From my experience with and passion for various music styles, from classical to pop, it is obvious that the repertoire we will cover can be very broad. Do you play in an orchestra or ensemble? Bring your parts to lessons, so that you will be able to play the most difficult passages with ease and in a relaxed manner! If you want to delve deeper into improvisation on the violin, that is also possible!
Lesson Location
I live and teach in Amsterdam. The studio where I teach is in De Pijp, and I prefer to teach there. If another solution is desired, it is also possible to meet at your home, or at my home on Zeeburgereiland.
About me
I was born and raised in Germany and completed my bachelor's degree in violin at the Conservatory of Amsterdam under the supervision of Ilya Grubert. I obtained my master's degree in Zurich with the renowned violinist Ilya Gringolts. After that I returned to Amsterdam to work as a freelancer. My most recent studies were with Shunske Sato in Amsterdam on baroque violin. Since then, I have played with Concerto Koln, Kolner Akademie and the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra. I also started producing music and since then I have been active in the pop and hip-hop music industry.
