Violin Lessons in Amsterdam

Hello! My name is MengHan Wu, a young professional violinist and teacher in Amsterdam. Whether you're a beginner, have been playing for a while, or play modern or baroque violin, you're very welcome to come for a trial lesson.

Why a trial lesson?

There's always a lot to discuss before you take a lesson. For example, lesson times, availability, lesson schedules, and your choice of music. Perhaps you don't have a violin yet? I'm happy to help you find an instrument to rent or buy. Most importantly, you'll get a feel for how I teach.

What are the beginner lessons like?

You'll learn excellent basic posture, including techniques for both the left and right hands. Discover how to get a natural and rounded sound from your violin. You'll also learn to read sheet music.

Ensemble Playing

There's plenty of great music to explore phrasing, articulation, bowing, vibrato, and musical expression. We do this through duets.

Violin lessons for children

Most children love music and enjoy playing an instrument. I approach violin playing in a playful way, and we use engaging materials so your child is motivated to learn to read sheet music and practice regularly at home. I ensure your child enjoys coming to lessons!

For advanced players

Take your playing and interpretation to the next level by working on bow control for articulation, timing, effect, and timbre. We'll delve into etudes, concert pieces, special bowing techniques, position playing, vibrato, and various musical styles to further refine your artistic skills and playing.

Do you play in an orchestra or ensemble?

Don't hesitate to bring your parts to lessons if you'd like advice on bowing and fingering. I'll help you prepare for your concerts and am happy to share my practical experience with you.

In-depth

To develop your musicality, we'll look at historical context, syntax, and style, and you'll discover how to articulate, phrasing, and play with dynamics in a clear and structured way.

Baroque Violin

Have you ever wondered what music sounded like in Bach's time? Are you curious about lesser-known music from the 17th century that's rarely performed today? Do you want to discover the unique sound of a Baroque violin with gut strings and a Baroque bow?

'Early Music'

These questions (and many more) are just the first steps into the world of early music. Draw inspiration from historical sources and discover a wealth of "new" Baroque repertoire. Above all, I'll introduce you to the concept of "affect" and help you discover how to play Baroque music based on insights and knowledge.

Where do I teach?

You're welcome in my studio in De Pijp. I can also come to your home for lessons. We can discuss this during the trial lesson.

About Me

My name is MengHan Wu, but you can simply call me Mo. I'm from Taiwan and have lived in Amsterdam for five years. I started playing the violin when I was eight and have never stopped since. I'm an active musician and frequently perform as an ensemble leader and soloist.

Performances

My performances have taken me to venues in Asia, Europe, and the United States. I earned a master's degree in baroque violin from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where I studied with violinist Antoinette Lohmann, and a master's degree in modern violin from the University of Oklahoma. (US)
