Anna Choi – Bandoneon Lessons in Rotterdam
Hello! I'm Anna Choi, a South Korean bandoneonist. I'm from Seoul, and my passion for the enchanting sound of the bandoneon brought me to Rotterdam, where I specialised in bandoneon and world music at the Codarts Conservatory. In addition to performing, I enjoy teaching both beginners and advanced students.
Beginners
Perhaps you discovered the bandoneon through the tango or were moved by the captivating music of Astór Piazzolla? Have you ever tried playing and experienced how overwhelmingly difficult it seems at first?
You are not alone!
The bandoneon was my second instrument, and I started as an adult. So, I truly understand what it's like to start from scratch and navigate the complex keyboard layout.
My goal?
My goal is simple: To make making music and learning an instrument as enjoyable, stimulating, and musically meaningful as possible for you. While simultaneously building a strong foundation for expressing your feelings through your favourite music, you'll learn how to play the bandoneon.
How do we approach this?
By playing simple melodies by ear and adding "reasonable" harmonies, you'll discover the bandoneon in a playful yet structured way. After a few lessons, you'll play your first piece. I'll also introduce you to the basics of music theory and teach you how to read music.
Breathing with the instrument.
The bandoneon works like a wind instrument: how you use the bellows and the air is just as important as which keys you play. The first step is learning to breathe and move with the instrument.
- Inhale
- Exhale
- Play
This breath-based approach is essential for pitch control, and yes, it can be meditative too!
Good posture
Many beginners experience tension in their wrists or fingers. We focus on healthy posture, relaxed movements, and body awareness, so you can play with freedom, strength, and without risk of injury.
Advanced - Tango
Once you've mastered the basics, I'll give you clear instructions and demonstrate how to refine your technique, musicality, and style. You'll discover the colours and expressive possibilities that give the bandoneon its unique sound. This includes working on vibrato, dynamics, articulation, special effects, marcato, syncopation, staccato, phrasing, and creating a beautiful solo with rubato!
Expand your repertoire
The bandoneon is a versatile instrument and sounds fantastic playing Bach, Scarlatti, pop songs, contemporary pieces, or folklore. I'll tailor the repertoire to your taste and level, keeping you motivated.
Ensemble
Whether you play in a tango orchestra or in a smaller group (duo, trio, etc.), I'm happy to advise you on how to fine-tune your tempo, articulation, and tonal balance, so you can better connect with and communicate with your fellow musicians.
Class Location
Classes take place in my studio in Rotterdam East. I also enjoy traveling to nearby locations easily accessible by public transportation (I don't own a car or bicycle).
About Me
I hold a degree in World Music from Codarts University of the Arts and studied with the renowned maestro Juanjo Mosalini at the Edgar-Varèse Conservatory in France.
Performing Artist
I perform tango, classical, and contemporary music, and combine my own artistic projects with work in tango ensembles and orchestras throughout Europe.
