My name is Berta Mariana, a professional violinist and dedicated violin teacher based in Utrecht. I offer personalised violin lessons for children, teenagers and adults in a supportive, inspiring and encouraging environment. My teaching combines solid technique with creativity, helping every student build confidence while enjoying the process of making music.

Violin Lessons for Children

Children enjoy engaging, well-structured lessons where they learn to read music, understand basic music theory and play their first melodies and duets in a fun and motivating way. For children, music lessons can also support cognitive development, strengthen memory, improve listening skills and enhance coordination and fine motor skills. 

Private Violin Lessons

Every student is unique, which is why each lesson is tailored to individual goals, interests and learning pace. Adults are equally welcome, whether you are a complete beginner, returning to the violin after many years, or looking to refine your technique.

Beginners Welcome

You can start making music from your very first lesson. Step by step, you will learn to read music while developing a solid technical foundation through carefully selected exercises, scales and enjoyable repertoire. Lessons include duets, allowing us to make music together from the very beginning, making learning both effective and inspiring.

Intermediate & Advanced Players

If you already play the violin, lessons will be designed around your personal ambitions. Together we will work on:

• developing a refined technique
• beautiful tone production
• vibrato
• musical interpretation
• confidence in performance.

A trial lesson is the perfect opportunity to get to know each other, experience my teaching style and explore what learning the violin is all about. During the trial lesson, we will:

• answer any questions you may have about lessons, instruments or practice.

Healthy Playing with Body Awareness

As a passionate practitioner of Yoga and the Alexander Technique, I believe that good posture and body awareness are essential for enjoyable and sustainable violin playing. During lessons, I help you develop natural movement, release unnecessary tension and build healthy playing habits. This not only improves violin technique and sound quality but also contributes to overall physical wellbeing.

Ensemble Playing

Making music together is one of the most rewarding parts of learning an instrument. Playing duets and ensemble music develops listening skills, rhythm, intonation and musical communication. It also prepares students who may wish to join an amateur orchestra or chamber ensemble in the future.

Lesson Location

Lessons take place in my comfortable teaching studio in Utrecht, conveniently located and easily accessible from Kanaleneiland, Utrecht City Centre and Utrecht Zuid.

Online Violin Lessons

Would you prefer to learn from home? I also offer live online violin lessons for beginners, intermediate and advanced students. Online lessons include personal guidance, real-time feedback and a structured learning programme, allowing you to make steady progress wherever you are.

About Me

I am a Portuguese violinist based in the Netherlands. I began playing the violin at the age of ten and studied at the National Conservatory of Music in Lisbon, the National Superior Orchestra Academy in Lisbon and the University of Arts in Castelo Branco. I completed my Master's degree at the Utrecht Conservatory under the guidance of violinist Eeva Koskinen.

Alongside teaching, I perform regularly as an orchestral and chamber musician with ensembles including the Portuguese Chamber Orchestra, Portuguese Philharmonic Orchestra, Orquestra Sem Fronteiras, Ensemble MPMP, Almada Chamber Orchestra, Nieuwe Philharmonie Utrecht and Libero Strijkorkest.

Throughout my career, I have received awards in both solo and chamber music competitions and have performed as a soloist with the Orchestra of the National Conservatory of Lisbon.
