About Recorder lessons

Recorders for All Ages

The recorder is a versatile and accessible wind instrument that has been played for centuries. Many children are introduced to the recorder at a young age as their first instrument, because it's relatively easy to master the basics. But the recorder also offers a surprising number of possibilities for adults.

In which music can you play the Recorder?

The recorder adapts effortlessly to various musical styles. From baroque music to modern pop and world music!

Is the Recorder a solo Instrument?

The recorder can be played as a solo instrument and in consorts, in which, just like in a vocal quartet, the soprano, alto, tenor, and bass recorders play the score.

Out of Fashion

In the second half of the 18th century, the recorder slowly fell out of fashion. It wasn't until the 20th century that the instrument was rediscovered, and recorder music flourished again, with both old and new repertoire.

Are there different Types of Recorders?

There are several types of recorders, such as the soprano, alto, and tenor recorder, which can be used together in ensembles and orchestras. This allows both beginners and advanced musicians—young and old—to enjoy making music together.

Are there the only 3 Types?

No, there are many more recorders! From very small and high-pitched sopraninos to enormously large and low-pitched ones. Some recorders are so large that you have to climb onto a chair to play them. They sound so low you can barely hear them!

History

The recorder is a woodwind instrument with a long history. It's one of the oldest instruments, and the first recorders were made as early as the 14th century. Even in non-Western cultures, the wooden flute has been in use for centuries. Beautiful and exceptionally virtuosic pieces were written for it during the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

What is a Recorder Consort?

A recorder consort is an ensemble of all recorders, in which all the voices of the score, the composition, are played by recorders. There are also gamba consorts, in which all the voices are played by viola da gambas.

Popular

In folk music, we encounter various relatives of the recorder. Think of the 18th-century tin whistle or flageolet, but also the bag pipe, which is essentially a recorder with a large bellows underneath! In Arabic and Indian music, the flute is a common instrument, and don't forget the flute-playing Cupid or Amor from Greek and Roman antiquity!
