About Clarinet lessons

Why choose a clarinet?

It's wonderful to lose track of time, leave the news behind, and completely lose yourself in another world. Your world! And if the sound of the clarinet appeals to you, the choice is easy. Of course, you'll first book a trial lesson to get acquainted with your teacher and, if you've never played the clarinet before, with the instrument!

Is the clarinet a difficult instrument to learn?

Once you master the technique of playing a single-reed instrument, you can quickly get a beautiful sound from your instrument. With a little practise every day, you'll soon get the hang of it. You'll master the clarinet fingering quickly, and you can start exploring your favourite music.

What is a single-reed instrument?

A single-reed instrument is a wind instrument with a mouthpiece and a single flat reed. Like the saxophone, the taragot, and the chalumeau, the clarinet has a single reed.

How do you play the clarinet?

You blow air through a mouthpiece, passing it through a cylindrical tube with a small bell at the end. The single reed is clamped into the mouthpiece and acts as a membrane that vibrates in your mouth when you blow.

What is embouchure?

Your embouchure (mouth position and lip tension) directs the airflow directly into the instrument. You curl your lower lip inward, over your lower teeth, and apply slight pressure to the reed. This influences the timbre and pitch.

Holes and Keys

The clarinet has finger holes and keys. The holes covered by the fingers often have a ring (breastplate) to operate keys that are out of reach of the fingers. Some keys are played with the little finger. The holes are all on the front, except for the thumb hole on the back.

What are clarinet reeds made of?

Most reeds are made of antarctica. Synthetic reeds are also available. The stiffness of the reed affects the sound and ease of blowing. This is expressed as a number from 1 to 5. Beginners often use 2.5 for the stiffness of the reed.

What is the predecessor of the clarinet?

The chalumeau is considered the predecessor of the clarinet. This instrument was developed in the late Baroque period and, like the recorder, has holes and the same fingering. Read more about the chalumeau here.

What is a taragot?

In Central European folk music, besides the clarinet, the taragot or tarogato is also played. This is a wooden instrument that resembles the clarinet in appearance. The sound is clear and sultry, reminiscent of a soprano saxophone. The name of the instrument originally comes from Hungarian (tarogato). The Romanian name is 'Taragot'.

In which types of music can you use the clarinet?

The clarinet can be used in a wide variety of music. The clear sound of the clarinet is indispensable in symphony orchestras, concert bands, folk music ensembles, and brass bands. Think of atmospheric melodic lines and virtuoso passages in Balkan, Greek, Klezmer, jazz, or classical and contemporary music. The clarinet also plays an important role in classical chamber music and as a solo instrument.

Bass clarinet

There are many sizes and types of clarinets. Depending on the key, desired sound, and repertoire, experienced clarinetists can choose from a wide range of instruments. The bass clarinet has the largest tube, the lowest pitch, and the most distinctive sound.

Is switching from saxophone to clarinet difficult?

Not at all! Most saxophonists get a good sound from a clarinet right away, and you quickly get the hang of it!

Do I get group lessons?

You get private lessons for the best results. Making music with personal attention is relaxing and enjoyable, and at the same time, you're truly working meticulously and consciously to create something beautiful! You'll work on sound, rhythm, harmony, and melody, and even the smallest details matter!
