Passion for the cello!
Hello! I am Fernando Romaguera Lara, a Spanish cellist and enthusiastic conservatory-trained cello teacher in Utrecht. I come from a family of musicians and started playing the cello at the age of 7. Since then, my cello and I have been inseparable. I love sharing my passion for music, and of course for the warm, singing tone of the cello, with you!
Cello lessons at your home
I have years of experience teaching children, adolescents, and adults, and I am happy to come to your home for cello lessons.
Trial lesson
In the trial lesson, we get acquainted, and I am curious to hear you or your child play. You will immediately get an impression of my teaching style. We will discuss what you want to do with the cello, which lesson times suit you, and we will take a look at the lesson packages. I can also advise you on renting or buying a cello.
Cello lessons for children
Your child will learn to read sheet music, the technique of plucking and bowing, and how to get their fingers properly on the strings through play, while we develop musicality using classical and modern pieces. We always play together during the lesson. Especially if your child has already had lessons and welcomes new input, my lessons offer challenges and engaging material to stay motivated and play regularly!
Can you still start playing the cello when older?
I am often asked if it isn't too late to start playing the cello as an adult. I can tell you wholeheartedly: You are never too old to start playing the cello! With targeted exercises, ensemble playing of classical and/or popular music, and scales, you will develop your skills and a beautiful sound on your cello. Reading sheet music and basic music theory are part of the lesson, and you will enjoy everything you discover, experience, and master!
How do you stay motivated?
By playing duets for two cellos, you learn a lot and make rapid progress. The enjoyment you derive from this is the best motivation to pick up your cello regularly. By analysing and practising difficult passages together, you learn a method to study effectively and independently in a short time.
How do you make your playing more interesting?
With etudes and performance pieces (both well-known and lesser-known!), we work on:
- sound,
- vibrato,
- position playing,
- thumb position
- smooth bowing technique.
- playing in tune
- harmonics
- interpretation
- dynamics
We look for the background of the pieces on your music stand and examine how a composition is structured—harmonically and structurally—to deepen your interpretation and take your playing to a higher level.
Orchestral parts can be difficult
I have extensive experience in orchestral playing and can help you effectively if you encounter difficult passages in your orchestral parts. I will give you practical tips on how to master the tricky spots effectively and quickly. You can always bring your orchestral parts along for fingerings, bowing, and advice on practising.
About Me
I have studied cello with many different teachers in Spain, Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands. The passion they showed to share their professionalism, artistry, knowledge and skills on this instrument, inspired and continues to inspire me to become a better cellist, teacher and musician every day.
Freelance Cellist
In addition to teaching, I am an active cellist who works as a freelancer with Dutch, German, Swiss and Spanish orchestras. I also perform in solo and chamber music concerts.
