Flamenco is a fascinating style of singing, dancing and guitar playing that originated in Andalusia, in the south of Spain. It is an integral part of flamenco music. Flamenco is a passionate and emotional genre known for its complicated rhythms, intense emotional singing and fiery dancing. Traditional flamenco guitars usually have nylon strings. The strings are played with the nails and all five fingers of the right hand are used.
What is striking about the flamenco guitar is a shallower and slimmer body, compared to classical guitars. This gives the flamenco guitar a fierce, powerful and precussive sound. The various playing techniques such as rasgueado, picado, alzapua and tremolo are characteristic of the dynamic character of flamenco music.
Mastering the flamenco guitar involves not only technical skill, but also a deep understanding of the cultural and historical roots of the genre. Playing without passion, melancholy, poetry and intense emotion is not conceivable in flamenco. Text, acting and singing have a direct connection with the enormous range of diverse dance forms and the resulting rhythms and rhythmic patterns.
