About Piano lessons
What genres can I play on the piano?
Is there a style of music in which the piano doesn't play a role? You can undoubtedly think of something, but playing the piano truly offers countless possibilities for learning any kind of music. The piano is a versatile instrument, and you can play virtually any music you want on it. Classical music, jazz, pop, songwriter, tango, Latin, and so on! Within all these styles, there are countless possibilities for personal expression in music.
Striking your string instrument?
Indeed! You can think of the piano as both a string instrument and a percussion instrument. And then the piano is also called a keyboard instrument, just like a harpsichord, keyboard, Fender Rhodes, or a Hammond organ, for example. Originally, and still today, the piano is a mechanical instrument.
What is the difference between a piano and a harpsichord?
Around 1700, harpsichord builder Bartolomeo Cristofori invented a method that, instead of plucking the string, could also strike a hammer by pressing a key. The hammers were made of wood and covered with leather.
Mechanical and musical!
Silbermann, in particular, developed Cristofori's initiative and improved the mechanism. The first pianos (by Graf, Broadwood, Cristofori, Silbermann, and others) were called Hammerflugel, fortepiano, or pianoforte. The strings ran straight across the soundboard and the early pianos had a different mechanism than the later pianos and grand pianos by Sebastian Erard, Bosendorfer, and Bechstein, among others. Erard was one of the first builders to cross the bass and treble strings across the soundboard, using two bridges. On all grand pianos and upright pianos, hammers with felt heads strike the strings via a sophisticated mechanism, and it's possible to control the volume and dynamics with your touch.
Is playing the piano difficult?
The technique of playing the piano is as difficult and complex as you want it to be... and that can be quite a challenge! However, you can already start enjoying your piano when you can play a few chords beautifully under a melody. Or when your first Clementine Sonatina, Bach's Invention, Schubert Sonata, or one of the most virtuosic pieces you can imagine is performed during a student performance!
Can I learn to improvise?
Improvisation offers enormous possibilities, and here too, you can explore and push your own boundaries in any musical genre. Under the guidance of an experienced and enthusiastic teacher, you'll certainly progress greatly and be consistently motivated and inspired.
Can I take a trial lesson before starting lessons?
Whether you're a complete beginner or have been playing piano for a while and want to delve deeper into a particular style of music, you can always book a trial lesson first. With the 5 or 10-lesson pack, you're flexible and never miss a lesson!
Do you really need to practise for at least an hour every day?
In private piano lessons, you'll work in a fun and relaxed way on an excellent technical foundation to develop your piano playing in the direction you prefer. You'll learn to practise regularly and effectively, allowing you to create music freely and more relaxed in the time you have available.
Can I also take music theory classes?
Yes, you can. All teachers offer this and integrate it in your lessons. With scales, chords, music theory, improvisation, etudes, and performance pieces, you'll develop a deeper understanding of the music, and you will expand your
Some History
Instruments can be divided into three categories based on how they produce sounds. Those categories are string instruments, wind instruments, and percussion instruments. The piano's ancestry can be traced back through various instruments such as the clavichord, harpsichord, and dulcimer. But if it were traced back even further, one would find that the piano is a descendant of the monochord. In other words, based on its ancestry the piano can be classified as a string instrument.
Versatile and dynamic!
Although the piano can be classified as a string instrument due to the fact that the sounds come from the vibration of strings, it can also be classified as a percussion instrument because the way to produce sound is by striking the strings with little hammers. The piano is characterised by its large range and enables you to play melodies and chords, as a soloist or in a group, band or classical ensemble
Piano in all kinds of music
It is a musical instrument that has broad appeal. Whether you like classical music like Chopin, Mozart, Debussy, Ravel, Rachmaninoff or other piano music, like Tango by Osvaldo Pugliese, Einaudi, Oscar Peterson, Hank Jones, Bill Evans or Elton John, the piano is a challenging instrument and, depending on your goals, you'll definitely must practise frequently to achieve the level you strive for. You will be able to clearly mark your progress, enabling you to become motivated with each and every lesson.
