What Are String Instruments?

The family of string instruments is one of the largest and most diverse in the world. Some are plucked, some are bowed, and others are struck. Even instruments such as the piano, harpsichord, qanun, hackbrett, santoor and cimbalom all belong to the string family.

What they have in common is simple: their sound is produced by vibrating strings. The difference lies in how those strings are set in motion.

Three Ways to Make a String Vibrate

Every string instrument creates sound in one of three ways:

  • Plucking
  • Striking
  • Bowing

Each method produces its own unique character, tone and playing technique.

Plucked String Instruments

Everyone knows the guitar, but it is only one member of an enormous family. Classical guitars, flamenco guitars and electric guitars all produce sound by setting the strings into motion with the fingers, fingernails or a plectrum.

The pitch depends on the length, thickness and tension of the vibrating string. Thicker strings have more mass and produce lower notes, while thinner strings create higher pitches.

Changing the Pitch

When you press a string against a fingerboard or fret, you shorten the vibrating part of the string. The shorter the vibrating length, the higher the note. This simple principle is shared by countless instruments around the world.

Plucked Instruments Without a Fingerboard

Not every plucked instrument requires you to stop the strings with your fingers.

Instruments such as the zither, Japanese koto, harp, qanun, kora and ndungu have many more strings than a guitar or violin. Each string has its own fixed length, producing its own pitch. Instead of changing notes by shortening a string, the player simply plucks a different one.

The Harpsichord: A Clever Mechanism

The harpsichord looks similar to a piano because it has a keyboard, but it works in a completely different way.

Pressing a key activates a small mechanism fitted with a tiny plectrum that plucks the string rather than striking it. In a sense, a harpsichord is a mechanically operated harp.

Its bright, sparkling tone made it one of the most important keyboard instruments of the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

And Then There's the Piano...

Surprisingly, the piano is also a percussion instrument.

When you press a key, a carefully designed mechanism causes a felt-covered hammer to strike the string. Like a harp or harpsichord, the strings vary in length and thickness—from long, heavy bass strings to short, thin treble strings—but instead of being plucked, they are struck.

That's why the piano belongs to three instrument families at once:

  • Keyboard instrument
  • String instrument
  • Percussion instrument

Struck String Instruments

The piano is not the only string instrument whose strings are struck.

Around the world you'll find fascinating instruments such as the:

  • Cimbalom (Central & Eastern Europe)
  • Hackbrett (Germany, Austria & Switzerland)
  • Santoor (India)
  • Yangqin (China)
  • Salterio (Spain & Italy)

These instruments are usually played with lightweight wooden mallets that strike the strings, creating a bright, resonant sound.

Bowed String Instruments

Bowed instruments create sound by drawing a bow across the strings.

A bow is usually made from wood and strung with horsehair, although modern materials are also used. As the bow moves across the string, friction causes it to vibrate. Those vibrations travel through the bridge into the body of the instrument, where they are amplified into the rich sound we hear.

How Does a Bow Produce Sound?

The bow is drawn across the string at approximately a right angle.

The speed of the bow, the pressure you apply and the exact contact point between the bridge and fingerboard all influence the sound. Faster movement creates more friction and therefore more energy, while the position on the string affects resistance, tone colour and projection.

Producing a beautiful sound is a balance of technique, control and musical expression. Every movement of the bow makes a difference, allowing skilled players to create an astonishing range of colours, dynamics and emotions.

Learning a string instrument is about much more than playing the right notes—it's about discovering how sound itself comes to life.
