Hi! I'm Erwin Willemse, all-round musician and experienced bass guitar teacher in Utrecht. Planning your first bass guitar lesson or played the bass before and want to pick up the instrument again? Let's go! My bass lessons are open to both beginners as well as more experienced bass players.

We use modern methodes and personalised exercises to create a solid technical basis. You'll learn bass patterns, scales, if you want to read music and basic music theory. In no time you'll be able to play some heavy bass lines!

My inspiration?

The list of bands and bassists that I find cool and inspiring is too long to mention here, but my tastes are broad and I listen to as many different types of music as possible to enjoy, get inspired and keep learning. A few examples? Jaco Pastorius, Pino Palladino, Will Lee, Marcus Miller and last but not least Stuart Zender, first bass player and co-founder of Jamiroquai.

About Me

My fascination with groove and rhythym could have suggested a career as a drummer. However, the mysterious, deep sounds proved more attractive. I had my first performance playing the bass guitar while still in primary school.
After a series of adventures, completed and aborted educations and careers, the unavoidable became eminent.

I longed for serious musical education and in 2006 I graduated at the Utrecht Conservatory, holding a degree in Bachelor of Music. From the start of my education I am active as a bass guitar teacher, workshop leader and band coach. Besides giving private lessons, I taught at the UCK (Utrecht), at De Kom (Nieuwegein) and at Muziekschool Vianen.

I regularly perform in a variety of settings: with one of my regular bands, as a session musician or in projects. My experience ranges from Soul, R&B, HipHop and Gospel to Funk, Disco and Dance, and from Pop, Blues and Rock to Latin, Fusion and Jazz.
I perform on stages in The Netherlands, Belgium, Israel and Brazil. I studied in The Netherlands with Theo de Jong, Wilbrand Meischke and Sven Schuster and in São Paulo, Brazil, with Thiago Espirito Santo.

Great Teacher!

Erwin is a great teacher. He is enthusiastic and shows great interest in me as a musician, but also in my musical taste and my opinions. Inspirerende basles!

De lessen bij Erwin zijn super inspirerend! Zelf bas ik al een ruime tijd en heb ik in meerdere bands gespeeld. Maar ik merkte dat ik in sommige dingen vastliep. Dus ik besloot om weer eens na lange tijd basles te nemen. Erwin voelt goed aan waar de pijnpuntjes zitten en heeft goeie vakkennis om daar dieper op in te gaan, zodat je echt resultaat ziet! Naast dat het een topdocent is het ook nog een super aardige kerel waardoor er een hele fijne relaxte sfeer hangt. Kortom zeker een aanrader!!!

Great Help!

Been having lessons with Erwin for about 9 months now. I have a musical background which gives me a big advantage in learning a new instrument, but still the lessons with Erwin have been of great help. You’ll be able to come a long way by yourself, but at a certain moment you get stuck because you’re just a bit too clumsy and simply can’t see it on your own.
His lessons have given me a lot of insight in the instrument. […in the lessons…] I’m playing songs I like. Erwin always chooses good exercises to help me overcome the tricky parts in those songs. This teacher knows what he talks about and tries to accommodate each student as much as possible. That’s why the lessons stay fun, but also very educational. After each lesson I’m returning home with lots of inspiration!

Improvisatie

Lessen bij Erwin is altijd gezellig, ontspannen, je ontwikkelt je op je eigen tempo, maar wordt altijd positief gestimuleerd door Erwin. Het is erg leuk dat er ruimte is voor improvisatie, maar er is ook aandacht voor de theorie, vingeroefeningen, timing etc. De lessen zijn erg compleet. Het is fijn om een leraar te hebben die weet waar hij het over heeft: Erwin is gewoon erg goed!
Je hebt zelf ook veel invloed en mag aangeven wat je graag wilt leren of in welke muziekstijl je je wilt verdiepen.

Toffe gast!

Erwin is toffe gast en een goede docent. We hebben o.a. samen mijn baslijnen doorgenomen voordat ik de studio inging. Zeer leerzaam en nuttig. Ook tijdens de mix-fase van de CD heeft Erwin (op afstand) meegeluisterd en advies gegeven voor wat betreft de bas (geluid, plek in de mix etc.).

Ontspannen sfeer!

Ik volg inmiddels een half jaar basles bij Erwin. Via Google en de site van Vivaldi Music Lessons kwam ik bij Erwin terecht en heb ik een afspraak voor een proefles gemaakt, waarna ik gelijk een 10-lessen pakket heb aangeschaft. Erwin heeft een (voor mij) erg prettige manier van lesgeven, waarbij je zelf je eigen leertempo bepaalt. De nadruk in de lessen ligt, naast het ontwikkelen van techniek en repertoire, op het vormen van muzikaliteit en het krijgen van gevoel met je instrument. Hierdoor heb je een solide basis, van waaruit je verder kunt ontwikkelen. Dit vind ik, als beginnende basgitarist, erg fijn. Daarnaast heeft Erwin een fijne, relaxte persoonlijkheid, waardoor de sfeer tijdens de lessen ook ontspannen is. Voor mij zijn dit optimale omstandigheden om goed te kunnen leren!

Meteen overstag!

Na lang te hebben getwijfeld uiteindelijk op mijn 45ste toch besloten dat ik de basgitaar wilde leren bespelen. Het instrument intrigeerde mij al lange tijd, maar mijn muzikale kennis was nihil. Na een proefles bij Erwin ging ik meteen overstag. Erwin is erg inspirerend en motiverend. Verwacht niet dat hij je van A tot Z bij de hand neemt. Hij stelt heel gerichte vragen en laat je veel zelf ontdekken. Na negen lessen en veel oefenen ben ik al verder gekomen dan ik ooit had durven denken. De lessen zijn elke keer een feestje en leveren een hoop kennis op. Erwin is naast een uitstekende docent ook een prettige kerel. Niet langer twijfelen dus, maar snel die proefles regelen!

Zeer tevreden!

Heb nu sinds een jaar les van Erwin en ben zeer tevreden over zijn wijze van lesgeven. Ik had geen enkele muzikale achtergrond en ben volkomen blanco gestart met de basgitaar. De kwaliteit van Erwin zit hem in zijn bijna holistische aanpak. In zijn benadering voelt hij perfect aan wat passend is voor mij en helpt hij mij echt verder.
Met een realistisch ambitieniveau weet hij mij te enthousiasmeren om naast een drukke baan toch veel energie te steken in "the nobel art of bass playing”. Hij is een plezierig en gedreven mens met enorm veel vakkennis.

Ik ervaar Erwin als een betrokken docent die goed meedenkt met de wensen en behoeftes voor het spelen van de basgitaar. Ik en Erwin zoeken samen de beste manier voor mij om te spelen en daardoor blijf je gemotiveerd om te spelen. Erwin geeft veel goede voorbeelden voor het spelen waardoor je techniek snel verbetert. Je kan je op je eigen tempo oefenen en is het geen probleem als het niet gelukt is. Dan zoeken we samen naar een andere oplossing. Erwin is kort gezegd: een topdocent. Hij is enthousiast en heeft ontzettend veel interesse in mij als muzikant maar ook naar mijn muziek smaak en meningen. Hij past zijn lessen aan op wat ik nodig heb als leerling en komt met orginele ideeën en oefeningen om mij te helpen met het bereiken van mijn doelen. Tenslotte neemt hij de tijd in zijn lessen, creëert hij rust en heeft hij geen haast, waardoor ik me als leerling niet opgedrongen voel.

For many years..

For many years Erwin taught me bass guitar. Because of my work and other circumstances, there’s alternating periods in which I can spend more time or less time on having bass guitar lessons. Through the years Erwins lessons for me have been a continuous and stable factor to help me study playing the bass. The lessons are adjusted to what I think is important for me at that moment. When I’m playing in a band there’s room to work on developing my own basslines for our tracks. In other periods were focussing more on technique, theory and musical hearing. What’s very pleasant about his lessons is that Erwin adjusts very easily to what’s important for me, and shapes the lessons so that they fit my goals for this given period. Besides that, he keeps track of progress and continuity. And above all, Erwin is a very pleasurable, enthusiastic and relaxed person.

Goede coach!

Nu 10 lessen gehad bij Erwin en het is heel goed bevallen. Ondanks dat ik al enige ervaring had, heb ik nu pas het idee dat ik ook daadwerkelijk wat begrijp van wat ik speel. Ik kan zeggen dat in 10 lessen mijn basspel veel meer verbeterd is dan de afgelopen paar jaar zonder les.
Heel veel praktische oefeningen en tips gehad en ook een gedegen theoretische onderbouwing die duidelijk uitgelegd wordt. Erwin heeft ook veel kennis van apparatuur en alles om het muziekmaken heen, wat elke les weer enorm leerzaam maakt. Daarbij is hij ook nog eens een goede coach (wat de lessen extra leuk maakt en het nog meer stimuleert om thuis vaak de bas in handen te nemen). Tarieven zijn vergelijkbaar met andere bas- en gitaardocenten.
