Historische klarinet - Chalumeau

In tegenstelling tot de meeste bekende instrumenten is de klarinet een recente uitvinding, in 1690 in Neurenberg bedacht door Johann Christoph Denner. Aan het einde van de 18e eeuw onderging de klarinet vele belangrijke verbeteringen en innovaties. Dit gebeurde onder leiding van getalenteerde Europese bouwers zoals Theodor Lotz in Wenen of Heinrich Grenser in Dresden.

Wat veranderde er?

Er werd geëxperimenteerd met de vorm van de toongaten om te zien hoe deze de klank en resonantie beïnvloedde. Geleidelijk werden er meer toetsen toegevoegd om het instrument in staat te stellen technisch veeleisend repertoire te spelen.

Intiem geluid

Het geluid van de chalumeau is lichter en intiemer dan de klarinet. Met een breed spectrum aan klankkleuren, variërend van zacht en gedempt tot helder en trompetachtig, dankzij de drie verschillende registers (chalumeau, klaroen en altissimo);  De chalumeau heeft ook een houten mondstuk, maar een kleiner, zachter riet in vergelijking met het moderne instrument, wat een grotere flexibiliteit in articulatie en frasering mogelijk maakt.

Het spelen van muziek van onder andere Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven en Rossini, met de klarinet die deze componisten voor ogen hadden, geeft je een uniek en bevredigend gevoel van authenticiteit en opent je oren voor een vergeten klankwereld!

De Historisch Geïnformeerde Uitvoering is een belangrijke benadering van ons muziekmaken die tot doel heeft de manier waarop we muziek uit een bepaald tijdperk uitvoeren te bevragen en misschien te heroverwegen. Het doel is om door te breken naar iets compleet nieuws en een dieper inzicht te krijgen in de wereld van historische instrumenten: je maakt kennis met de sterke en zwakke punten van historische klarinetten, hun klankkenmerken en technische aspecten om ze zo authentiek mogelijk te laten klinken.

Vergelijken

Speel eens hetzelfde stuk op de historische en op de moderne klarinet, om het verschil te ervaren! Door de klankverschillen kun je de uitgangspunten van de componist beter begrijpen. Een deel van je reis bestaat uit ontdekken hoe er gedacht en gespeeld werd, aan de hand van teksten van Leopold Mozart of Johann Joachim Quantz.Ook in  klarinetmethodes uit de 18e en 19e eeuw, zijn waardevolle tips te vinden.

Chalumeau

De chalumeau is een minder bekend enkelriet blaasinstrument en de voorloper van de klarinet. De chalumeau was in de 18e eeuw erg populair in Duitsland, Italië en Oostenrijk.Een eenvoudig cilindrisch instrument met 8 gaten en twee kleppen. Het speelde een belangrijke rol in de eerste helft van de 18e eeuw, met name aan het Habsburgse hof in Wenen en Darmstadt.  Tegenwoordig wordt de chalumeau weer populairder! 

Repertoire

Het repertoire bestaat uit speelse duetten, charmante cantates en instrumentale stukken, voornamelijk geschreven door G.F. Telemann, die zelf een getalenteerd chalumeauspeler was, net als Christoph Graupner.

Compleet chalumeau consort

Het instrument is verkrijgbaar in verschillende maten en vormt een compleet consort van sopraan-, alt-, tenor- en bas-chalumeau. De speeltechnieken en vingerzettingen lijken sterk op die van een blokfluit. De tedere stem en warme klank zullen je betoveren!

Overeenkomsten blokfluit en chalumeau

Blokfluit en chalumeau vertonen veel overeenkomsten en waren aan het einde van de 16e eeuw een kanshebber. Als je al bekend bent met het repertoire en de speelstijl van de blokfluit, word je misschien uitgedaagd en geïnspireerd!

Zeldzame schoonheid

De zachte, fluweelzachte en intieme klank van de chalumeau geeft het gevoel van spontaan zingen. Niets staat zo dicht bij de menselijke stem als de chalumeau.
Het is ongelooflijk hoe zo'n eenvoudig instrument de luisteraar kan meenemen in een klanklandschap van zeldzame schoonheid!

Historical Clarinet - Chalumeau

Unlike most well-known instruments, the clarinet is a recent invention, created by Johann Christoph Denner in 1690 in Nürnberg. During the late 1700s, the clarinet underwent many significant improvements and innovations under hands of talented european makers like Theodor Lotz in Vienna or Heinrich Grenser in Dresden.

What changed?

The cut or shape of the tone holes was experimented on to see how it will affect its sound and resonance and gradually more keys were added to allow the instrument to play technically demanding repertoire.

Intimate Sound

The sound is lighter and more intimate, with a wide spectrum of colours ranging from soft and muted to clear and trumpet-like through its three different register (chalumeau, clarion and altissimo); this instrument also uses a wooden mouthpiece and a smaller, softer reed comparing to the modern instrument and this allows a greater flexibility in articulation and phrasing.

Playing music by Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven, Rossini among others, using the clarinet that these composers had in mind, will give you a unique and rewarding sense of authenticity and open your ears to a forgotten sound world!

The Historical Informed Performance is an important approach to our music making that aims to question and perhaps re-think how we perform music from a specific era. The aim is to break through to something completely new and have a deeper overview on the world of period instruments: you will get familiar with strenghts and weaknesses of historical clarinets, their sound's features and technical aspects to make them sound as genuine as possible.

Compare

Compare the same piece using the historical and modern clarinet to feel how the musical style differently applies and better understand the composer's writing. Part of your journey is to learn the musical style based on treatises like the one from Leopold Mozart or Johann Joachim Quantz or clarinet methods from the 18th and 19th century where precious tips can be found.

The Chalumeau

The Chalumeau, a simple cylindrical instrument with 8 holes and two keys, can be considered the baroque cousin of the clarinet and played a major role in the first half of the 18th century, especially in the Court of the Habsburgs in Vienna and in Darmstadt. 

Repertoire

The repertoire offers playful duets, charming Cantatas and instrumental pieces written mainly by G.F. Telemann, who was himself a talented chalumeau player and Christoph Graupner.

Similarities

Recorder and Chalumeau share a lot of similarities and were contenders in the end of the 16th century, therefore if you are already familiar with the repertoire and style of playing of the Recorder, you might get challenged and inspired!
