About Cello lessons
Playing the cello is fantastic!
The sound of the cello is close to the human voice and moves you directly! Sometimes you can feel the vibrations of the lower strings resonating in your body!
Is the cello a difficult instrument?
For many, it's a dream to play the cello one day, while others have been doing it for years and remain fascinated and continually challenged by the possibilities and challenges of this beautiful instrument!
Do you have to practice a lot on a cello?
It takes quite a bit of practice and patience before you can conjure that beautiful, warm cello sound from your instrument!
The cello used to be different.
The first cellos were large and primarily suitable for playing simple bass parts, basso continuo. In Italy, where these instruments were widely used around 1560, they were called a basso or a violone.
The next step!
Around 1670, the first violones were adapted to "modern tastes" and made smaller. Edges were literally sawn off and a reduction in size was applied everywhere. This is why hardly any large cellos have been found. However, the construction drawings and designs of violin makers around 1600 have been.
Why a smaller cello?
Eventually, people started building smaller instruments, with thinner strings and a narrower bridge and fingerboard. This made it possible to play music faster, with more virtuosity. Think of the virtuoso music of Gabrielli, Vivaldi, and Carl Ph. E. Bach. Of course, the sound box also became smaller, and the sound became lighter.
Are there different sizes of cellos?
Yes, there are all kinds of sizes, so that children and people with smaller hands can also play the cello. Many adults with smaller hands prefer te play a 7/8 cello.
Remarkable
Around 1700, most violones had been reduced to violoncelli. It's noteworthy that, although the "small modern" cello was already very popular, Corelli's violin sonatas (published in 1700) bear the title "per violino e violone o cembalo."
Cello is All-Round
In classical, romantic, contemporary, tango, and pop music, the cello remains a popular and indispensable instrument. When a film gets a little emotional, you often hear a beautiful melody played on the cello.
Can you play the cello while standing?
The cello is predominantly played while sitting. In chamber music, recitals, in orchestras, when played by soloists, and as backing strings. Even the cellists who play in heavy metal bands usually sit! But with a special stand, it's possible!
