About Violin lessons

Is the violin difficult to learn?

The violin is a soprano instrument (sopra means "above" in Italian) and therefore often plays the leading role. Therefore, many demands are placed on a violinist. It's safe to say that the violin isn't one of the easiest instruments to learn. However, there are many good violinists, so with plenty of practice and a lot of practice, you'll definitely master it.

Can you start violin lessons later in life?

Of course, you can start playing the violin whenever you want! With patience, regular practice, a love of music, and a good teacher, you'll go a long way.

How do I become a good violinist?

The best way to become a good violinist is to take lessons with an experienced, enthusiastic teacher and practice well and regularly. It's better to practice every day, for example, 15 minutes twice a day, than once a week for several hours at a time! Practice short but intense, regularly, and with concentration for the best results.

Is the ultimate goal to play first violin?

If your goal is to dominate, that's perfectly fine. Every bird sings its own song. But just like in everyday life, it's also important to be able to play second violin expertly, creatively, and reliably.

Is the second violin part usually easier?

When you play first violin in an orchestra, string quartet, folk group, or tango orchestra, you almost always play the melody, but without an excellent and experienced second violinist, you're nowhere! Did you know, second violin parts in orchestral and chamber music are often extremely challenging!

Why should I practise a lot on the violin?

Because you often lead the ensemble or orchestra from the melody, either as a soloist or with the second violinist, a beautiful and radiant sound is essential! To be clearly audible, the violin traditionally has a brighter tone than, for example, the cello or the bass. Plenty of reasons to continuously improve your technique and musicality.

What are the origins of the violin?

The violin has been used as a melody instrument since the Middle Ages and has developed through various forms into what we now call the violin. One of the violin's earliest precursors is the rebec, a three-stringed violin used in Europe during the Renaissance (1400-1500).

Rebec

Rebec is related to the rebab, a stringed instrument played as early as the 9th century in North Africa and Asia, and possibly found its way to Spain, Italy, and France through the spread of Islam.

Viol

From the rebec, the instrument developed in Europe into the viol, an instrument depicted by angels in ancient depictions, and later into the lyra da braccio. Well-known and close relatives of the rebab are the lyra (Crete), and the kemençe from Greek, Turkish, Persian, Kurdish popular music, and traditional maqam music.

Why is Italy famous for violins?

Around 1550 in Northern Italy (Cremona), what we might call the baroque violin emerged, the ultimate precursor to the modern violin. Materials, strings, bows, proportions, and playing techniques continue to evolve, and it remains a beautiful, challenging, and fascinating instrument that can be used in a wide variety of musical genres.

Is the transition from violin to viola difficult?

The viola is an indispensable instrument in orchestras and chamber music ensembles. Once you've mastered most of your violin skills, you can certainly switch to the viola and make a valuable creative contribution to both classical and pop arrangements!
